Cambridge is a popular county town of Cambridgeshire and famous for its university. It is situated on the River Cam approx 50 miles (nearly 80 km) north of London. The University of Cambridge, funded in 1209, is among top five universities in the world.
Settlements have existed near to the Cambridge area since ancient times. Archaeological proof of occupation through the Iron Age is a settlement on Castle Hill.
Cambridge is a non-metropolitan district functioned by Cambridge City Council. Cambridge Local Authority District covers most of the City's urban area. Cambridge is among the five districts within the district of Cambridgeshire. It is bordered on all sides by the rural South Cambridgeshire district.
The city council's head office is in the Guildhall, a big building located in the market square. Cambridge was sanctioned a Royal Charter by King John in 1207. City councillors now elect a mayor annually.
Cambridge presently has two official weather observing stations. These are National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) and the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. Also, the Digital Technology Group of the University's Computer Laboratory maintains a weather station on the West Cambridge site.
