About Cirencester

Cirencester is a market town located in east Gloucestershire of England, and it is 93 miles west north-west of London. Cirencester is situated on River Churn which is a branch of River Thames, and it is the largest town in Cotswold District. Royal Agricultural University is located in Cirencester. It is the oldest agricultural college founded in 1840. Corinium Museum of Cirencester is well known for its rich Roman collection. Roman name of the town Cirencester was Corinium, which is thought to be linked with old British tribe of Dobunni. Cirencester is linked with Itzehoe, Germany.

Education

Cirencester and its surrounding area have various primary schools and two secondary schools . Cirencester also has an independent school that serve 3-18 year age group students, Rendcomb College. This town used to have a 500-year-old Grammar School which was joined with secondary modern in 1966 to form Cirencester Deer Park School. Cirencester College was created in 1991. It took over the folloing three:

  • Cirencester Kingshill School
  • Cirencester Deer Park
  • Cirencester Site of Stroud College. 

It is situated on the Stroud Road, Deer Park School. This town hosted Preparatory School named Oakley Hall until 1994. It was closed in 1994 shortly after the R F B Letts retired who led the school since 1962. Housing now occupies grounds of the school.

History

In 1908 Bingham Hall was established. In 1912 in Cirencester first Council houses were built. Much more has been constructed between wars and after 1945. Inner ring road was constructed in Cirencester in the early 1970s. In 1974 new museum was opened in Cirencester. In 1975 new library was opened.In 1975, the  Cotswold Leisure Centre was opened to the public. In 1979 Brewery Arts Centre was opened. Some light industries moved to Cirencester during late 20th century. Now Tourism is the largest industry in Cirencester. Cirencester grew dramatically during the 20th century, and by 1971 this town had a population of 15000. Now, this city has a population of 19,000.
